Butler County Prosecutor Michael T. Gmoser has set his sights on indicting Punxsutawney Phil with fraud. Charges were brought up this past March after the alleged groundhog’s prediction of an early spring did not come true. Punxsutawney Phil is being charged with one count of misrepresentation of spring and may face the death penalty if convicted.
Phil also is wanted by the Montgomery County Police Department for fraud as well. On Mar. 21, 2013 the department sent out a tweet announcing that they are on a lookout for the famous groundhog. The Montgomery County Police Department has yet to capture the furry felon and assume he is somewhere holed up.
The president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Bill Deely has jumped to Phil’s defense claiming that he is to blame for the inaccurate weather forecast, not Phil. Supposedly Deely misinterpreted what Phil had said on Feb. 2, 2013. A date for trial has yet to be set. Phil has also yet to comment on the subject and continues to stay out of the public’s eye.
