Venomous rhetoric and horrifying threats, filled with obvious hatred, have been flowing out of North Korea over the course of the entire month regarding their potential attack upon the United States.
The dear Leader Kim Jong Un has been announcing to the world that he plans to commit a nuclear Armageddon upon the U.S. as well as its neighboring countries such as South Korea and Japan (who are major allies of the United States). With these kinds of threats coming from the most irrational leader in the world at this time, North Korea poses a major threat to the free world as we know it.
Yet, things have not always been this hostile in the recent past. North Korea would always make the annual threat to the world to make sure that we have not forgotten about them. The escalation truly began after North Korea performed a nuclear underground test on February 12, 2013. This caused major concern among the United Nations and caused the Security Council to pass stronger sanctions and embargoes on North Korea, which is already the most isolated country in the world.
Annual military exercises have also angered the North Korean military; The United States and South Korea have been performing “War Games” throughout the Korean Peninsula for the past month. What was planned to be a few weeks military exercise has turned into a month long duration of US naval ships sitting on the coast of North Korea awaiting any kind of offensive attack. Since that point on, North Korea has been using relentless rhetoric explaining how they look to further their nuclear development to the point of waging nuclear war with Western powers and allies.
The only country that has been able to have diplomatic relations with North Korea has been China, but in this modern era the relations have declined substantially. In the past, leaders of China had open relations with Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il. Now with Kim Jong Un in power, China’s leader Xi Jinping has established no formal relations with the leader and has yet to even talk to him over the phone or through diplomats. This lack of communication makes negotiations much more difficult and China cannot control North Korea as easily.
In recent days, North Korea has decreased its rhetorical threats and has taken a majority of its missiles off of the launching pads. This has, without a doubt, decreased stress worldwide. Negotiations now are being set up with China, the United States, North Korea and South Korea. Hopefully within the upcoming weeks a deal can come to pass that creates a compromise with North Korea and the rest of the free world.
The world should not be too certain of this yet. In past years, North Korea has entered into many negotiations willing to compromise and more times than not have backed out due to their irrational tendencies. North Korea will seek to have sanctions and embargoes lifted before they even think about dismantling their nuclear program. China and the United States will likely demand that North Korea dismantle its nuclear program before moving ahead.
