On February 22, the Girl Scouts of Troop 619 were toured through the high school by several art history students. The walls of West Milford HS are adorned with artwork painted by Art 4 students over the years. “This is a hidden gem,” troop leader Jennifer Metcalf explained to her scouts. “There are replications of art from Picasso to Warhol, and there are sophisticated art students who can guide us to greater art appreciation.”
The Girl Scouts were working on a “Journey,” to understand the roles that women play – historically, culturally and presently. The Journey is a newer Girl Scout program, which asks girls to zero-in on specific goals. To meet this goal, the HS Art teachers – Jen Monego and Cindy Gallaugher – worked with the art students such as Senior Kayla Osborne to create a walking tour focused on “Women in Art.” HS Seniors Katie Schiller and Christa Callamari were two docents for the scouts, showing them such pieces as Laila Shawa’s The Impossible Dream and Johannes Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring.
The girl scouts were thrilled to be taught by such role models as National Art Honor Society member Heather Piccoli. Scout Sasha Villanueva enthused, “The girls knew so much and answered all our questions.”
