The boys fencing team had a winning record of 20 wins and 14 losses, but in the dual meets that help qualify for states, they had a record of 3 wins and 11 losses. Coach DeVito, who has been coaching the boys team for 15 years and also coaches the boys soccer team in the fall, stated that he is surprised that, although the boys did not perform all that well this season, they have a winning record.
The overall captain for the 2012-13 season was epee fencer Ryan McCarthy, who told the newspaper staff that at the beginning of the season he was expecting the team to be better as a whole and win more meets. The other captains under Ryan are: epee captain Morgan Bailey, saber captain Brendan Ruddy, and foil captain Blake Ballin. The team’s strength was the foil squad having tough fencers like Blake Ballin and Jesse Hackett. The weakness was the saber squad with epee being a neutral figure.
Team members were able to find both positive and negative in the season. Ryan McCarthy said that, “For my last season, it was a little disappointing, but it was fun and that is what really matters.” Ryan’s best memory from his four years was from his freshman year during “Hell Week,” when Coach DeVito announced to everyone who made the team and what squad they would be apart of. Ryan said that he clearly remembers everyone telling him that he would be a foil fencer but when DeVito announced that Ryan was going to be an epee fencer, he was shocked but filled with joy.
Morgan Bailey, also a senior said that he improved a lot this season and is happy with his results. He admitted, “I am not particularly happy with the team victories, but they were remarkably close each time and that I am happy with.” The best things for Morgan’s season was that he really bonded with the team this year They were more like his family members, rather than just other people on the team.
