West Milford High School was filled with an energetic buzz when 50 alumni, ranging from freshman to seniors in college returned toWest Milford High School on January 10, 2013 for Alumni Day.
When asked what the purpose of Alumni Day is, Mrs. Copperstein, the guidance counselor who orchestrated the event, explained, “[It] helps counsel the sophomores, juniors, and seniors to know what post-secondary options are and college student’s experiences…” This event which has been a sure success for many years, once again educated high school students on college life and what options they might have.
During the morning, the alumni were assigned to certain classrooms where the students had questions prepared to ask the alumni. Their questions ranged from academics to sports, student majors to dorm life.
After the graduates answered the students’ questions, they convened in the media center, where supervisors of each department rattled of questions to the alumni. They wanted to know if the curriculum at West Milford High School readied the students for college academics, time management, and their majors.
The process of asking students back for Alumni Day is as follows: Mrs. Copperstein sends a letter out before Thanksgiving to all alumni who graduated last year. The first sixty alumni to respond by email are the ones who are chosen for the occasion. The alumni who respond after the first sixty are wait-listed in case any of the first sixty are unable to attend.
Mrs. Copperstein couldn’t have been more thrilled with the outcome. It was her first year organizing the event and it was a huge success. Copperstein shared, “It worked really well. They were all very excited. Everything ran really well.”
