On Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, players on all three levels of the field hockey program stepped out onto the field for games against Ramsey. Instead of sporting their black and white kilts and jerseys, however, the girls were dressed in black shorts and black and pink Play for the Cure tee-shirts in support of breast cancer research.
Not only did the teams commemorate their games to breast cancer awareness but also they collected money to donate to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, a charity that specializes in breast cancer research.
Back in late September, the coaches provided some incentive for the fund raising. The level that raised the most money would be rewarded with a special dessert provided by Coach Provost, the head Varsity coach. The girls did not delay in asking their peers if they would like to donate to the cause, some even made little collection containers and went around the cafeteria during lunchtime asking if anybody had spare change they wanted to give to the charity.
Then, on October 5, 2012, the Friday before the Play for the Cure game against Ramsey, each level turned in the money they collected. After all of the money was counted, the Junior Varsity team was revealed to be the winners of the competition, raising around $800. The JV team was rewarded with homemade cupcakes from Coach Provost. Together, the three teams made a donation of just over $1,600 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
In the end, this event became more than simply a fund raiser for many of the girls. On the day of the Play for a Cure game, the JV squad sat down for their ritual pregame pow-wow. As the girls pumped each other up and discussed the goals they wanted to accomplish during that night’s game, a few players shared an idea which really amped up the girls desire to win. “Let’s dedicate this game to anyone in our lives, who has fought cancer,” they said. “They were strong enough to fight then, so let’s go out there and fight for a win for them.”
