Coach Elmer Zimmerman is thrilled for the varsity girls to be hitting on the courts for another season. “After losing most of my seniors, I was a little nervous about what was going to happen this year, but the girls have shown a great effort for the start of a great season.” Elmer stated.
Since August, the WMHS varsity team has been doing their best to win as many games as possible this year. The team would not be the same without the two junior captains, first singles player Sabrina Koropchak and second singles player Ashley Dondershine.
At the end of the season, Zimmerman will be losing another five seniors, third singles player Franzie Federico and second doubles players Brielle Jussen and Taylor Justin. Also, the two extras, Rachel Damelio and Kelsey O’Connell, who were able to add much effort to the team and earned some wins. These seniors will definitely be missed! Luckily for Zimmerman, he still has his first doubles team Tina Lokai and Tess Korinko along with, two competitive players Ashley Caldaro and Diana Kreminski returning next year.
With all the rain this year, the weather has been a bit of a problem. The girls lost at States toSpartaHigh School, but recently first singles player Koropchak took the win at the Passaic County Tournament! Originally the counties were to be played atRamapoCollege. Because of the weather conditions, Zimmerman volunteered to host the counties at our very own Westbrook Courts.
On Oct. 9, the team was proud to earn Coach Zimmerman’s 500th win against Lakeland. Zimmerman was pleased to earn his 500th win with the girls when just last spring the boy’s varsity team earned theirs. It’s been a successful season for the girls, definitely not one to forget.
