The fun competition and large spectator crowds of this traditional event at West Milford High School make this a fun-loving time in which anyone can be part. The October Volleyball Tournament was one of the most successful this school has ever hosted.
The Tournament took place on Thursday, October 18. It was hosted by the freshman and senior classes (woo seniors!!!!). The entire school was invited to participate in this event as either players or spectators. Teams are made up of six players, and this year there were 23 teams – including one faculty team. All together, that means 78 people signed up to play. There was a $5 charge to play. Spectators paid only $3 to go and cheer their friends on. And on Oct. 18? The bleachers were filled. The teams choose to enter one of two divisions in the tournament, the hardcore division, and the leisure division. The winning team in each division gets… nothing actually. Everyone must be asking, what is the point in playing when there is no reward? Bragging rights, of course. Competition for those rights can be fierce. Luckily, Halloween came a little early this year and the winning teams in the two divisions did earn a big bag of candy for themselves.
The tournament is a good mix of competition and fun. Tradition holds that teams dress up to play, and compete for the honor of Costume Competition Champions. Last year’s champions, the Smexies held onto their title, winning the Costume Contest again.
This event was very successful, said to be the most successful thus far, earning the senior and freshman classes $363 apiece. These class funds will be used to lower the cost of events such as Project Graduation.
Just in case you are feeling deprived, because you missed this amazing fundraiser, don’t worry. There will be another one hosted by the seniors on Nov. 15, and one hosted by the freshman and sophomore classes on April 18. Start filling our a team roster, planning those costumes and sign up as soon as possible for one of the most fun activities the school has to offer. See you there!
