Another shop has opened in the high school halls and it has been successfully thriving throughout this past school year. Introducing “The Highlander Cove Specialty Shop,” located in room #100. The Highlander Cove is staffed and run strictly by the Life Skills students at West Milford High School.
This Specialty Shop provides WMHS students with healthy snacks such as yogurt parfaits and homemade baked items between periods. For student and staff convenience, the shop also offers all-occasion cards, seasonal handcrafted gifts and personal care items. In celebration of school spirit day, the students offer a breakfast shop every Friday morning.
The purpose of the shop is to give the students the opportunity to interact with their peers and develop social and interpersonal skills. At the same time, the students experience the challenges and rewards of being young entrepreneurs. They are responsible for keeping inventory, calculating profit and losses, setting prices and making the items to be sold. The shop also gives them the opportunity to learn how to run a business, deal with money and with inventory. These life skills will help the students in becoming successful, independent adults in the future.
The Highlander Cove is not only a terrific option for students on the run, but also ffers a tangible benefit to the Life Skills students, who get to meet new students whenever customers arrive. Patrons agree that the prices are reasonable and the inventory surprisingly varied. Need a gift? A quick pick-me-up? Stop by the Cove; they will have just what you need!
