To add to the abundant changes that were added to the policies this current year, is a new redesign of in-school. The renovation of the In-school Suspension Room has been circulating the students and staffs minds as they realized the new sign that replaced the old sign located above the door. The new name for the In-school Suspension room became the Highlander Refocus Center with an abbreviation of HRC instead of ISS.
The change of name was to create a positive outlook on the idea of ISS. The ISS room was used as a place for students to be sent who had completed inappropriate or unacceptable actions according to a teacher’s standards. The ISS room was also a place for students to receive their punishment for the failure of not following school policies.
In previous years, if students were to be sent to the ISS room they were to sit down and stay quiet upon finishing classwork or homework if the student were assigned any. According to Mr. Gorski, the principal here at West Milford High School, in the past years, the ISS room gave too much leverage to students which sparked the notion of the transformation. Now when sent to the HRC room as a student, one is to reevaluate your inappropriate actions or misconduct by writing a paragraph.Students must realize how they can better themselves not to make the same mistakes again, as well as make up the classwork and homework missed when spending time in the Highlander Refocus Center. Ms. Paul, the Highlander Refocusing Center teacher can now develop a better relationship and understanding with students to help them grow and step toward an optimistic and direction. Mr. Strianse, Vice Principal had an immense role in the transformation. Strianse agreed with the concept to redesign the ISS room to have a more positive outlook.
With this alteration of titles and the goals of the HRC hopefully, the students and staff of the West Milford High school will see an increase in positivity and optimism while increasing our overall Highlander School spirit which, is one of Mr. Gorski’s main aspirations for West Milford High school.
