On the 24th of May two events took place. One of which I am sure you are aware of is Highlander Day, an all around damp experience, and the other was one in which our own West Milford students participated for eternal glory. Yes, as I am sure you have guessed by now, I am talking about the Rubber Band Car Race, a competition for the school’s best and brightest, a tournament of champions. Hosted by the Critical Thinking Club (LOAN), the race only had the following rules:
- Construct a vehicle powered by 3 or less rubber-bands
- Any materials can be used, as long as it is ONLY powered by a rubber band
- It must fit through the school’s door
- All cars must be present at the school by 2:30 in the cafeteria on May 24th.
- NO FLAMES or other dangerous materials
- No Perpetual Motion Machines and/or Time Machines
And so it was written that students would compete with cars held together with duct tape, cars cut to perfection with razor sharp wit, and cars only powered by rubber bands and shear determination. The race held three categories: Speed, Distance, and Coolality. Speed and Distance being, obviously, how fast or far a car went. Coolality (measured in koolometers) was for creativity and all around awesomeness of car design. Judging was done by Mr. Wagner.
Mr. Gorski, himself, entered the race by sponsoring a car made by Zach Hankinson. The Gorskinator, it was called. As luck would have it, this car would win him the race in two categories: Coolaity and Speed. JoeZack Mohrenweiser received first place in distance . I, William Ruys, the author of this article, took second place in speed and third place in distance. Overall, it was an event of honor. Prides were crushed and girl scout cookies were eaten. A truly legendary experience.
<Shameless Plug> To those few who actually see this article, if you find yourself thinking “This sounds neat!!” and “How do I join such an awesome club that does amazing things !?!” then the Critical Thinking Club, also known as L.O.A.N. (The League of Amazing Nerds) would be happy to welcome you. (Rest assured we are not a cult) Stop by the Comp Sci. Room after school on Thursdays to find out more! </Shameless Plug>
