Following a terrific 2016 season, the West Milford High School Field Hockey team looked to respond with yet another successful run this year. Last season, the team managed to win the Passaic County Championships. It landed them in the tournament’s number one seed; the team got a first round bye. With a Passaic Valley win in the first round, West Milford defeated Passaic Valley by a score of 3-1 earning them a spot in the finals, where they won a nail-biter against Pompton Lakes, crowning them as champions. The team continued the season, making it to the playoffs. The team notched themselves the third seed in the eleven-team state tournament. In Group 2 of North Jersey, West Milford being the third seed,  had a bye through the first round, and would go on to face sixth seed and town rival, Lakeland. In the game against Lakeland, West Milford managed to squeeze out a victory by a score of 2-1. The dream run unfortunately ended one round away from the finals when the team was unable to beat the second seed of the tournament, Ramsey. They had their season come to an end after falling by a score of 3-0.

The dream run unfortunately ended one round away from the finals when the team was unable to beat the second seed of the tournament, Ramsey. They had their season come to an end after falling by a score of 3-0.  In the new season this year, the team continued where they left off last season, coming out with a fiery start. They began the year  with a record of eight wins, one loss, and two ties; the only loss was handed to the team from yet again, Ramsey, the same team that knocked West Milford out of the state playoffs last season.

Recently the team competed in the county tournament where they went in looking to repeat their results from last season, where they were crowned champions. The tournament for West Milford started with a first-round bye, as they were ranked at the second seed out of six. The first game that the team needed to play was against third seed Wayne Valley. West Milford pulled out a win by a score of 3-1, which had earned the team the spot in the county tournament finals. The final game of the tournament was against town rival Lakeland. The game went into double overtime and after a 0-0 tie throughout the game, Sammi Lyons scored the game winning goal earning the team a shutout and back to back county tournament victories.

The season for the team was already a success with a terrific record and being crowned county champions, but the West Milford Field Hockey team went looking for more. The team fought hard through the state tournament and managed to make it all the way to the semi-finals before they came up short falling to rival Lakeland. Nonetheless, it was a season not to forget.
