Everyone knows the iconic shoe when you pass by on Route 23 North, but most people in high school now wouldn’t remember ever actually going to Fairy Tale Forest when it was open. The children’s theme park featured around forty little cottages or building all based on famous fairy tales like “Rapunzel,” “Goldilocks and the Three Bears,” or “Cinderella.” There were costumed actors who would roam the grounds taking photos with the children, a magic show, small rides for children, and little treats to enjoy at a small café. However, in 1993 the establishment closed and, unable to sell, fell into disrepair. The buildings are falling apart, as are the statues of the famous characters from these tales. It was once revived as a BBQ joint, and a pretty good one at that, but there just was not enough traffic to sustain it. Current rumors in “Weird NJ” and on Facebook say that the location is due to reopen in 2016 and they are looking for people with various talents (painting, carpentry, plumbing, electric, etc.) to volunteer their time and energy to the cause. What will it be? Another theme park for children, a place for teens, another pizzeria? Only time will tell.
