What today’s generation of teens call “shnazzy” is what our parents probably called “groovy.” Undoubtedly, fashion trends throughout the years have evolutionized.
“Dress You Up”—80’s
“You’ve got style, that’s what all the girls say!” Recognize these lyrics? They’re from Madonna’s 1985 hit single Dress You Up. So what exactly was the style back then? Shoulder pads were totally “in” during the 80’s. Believe it or not, shoulder pads are ranked as one of the top worst fashion fads today (but recently have made a slight comeback!) People also loved wearing oversized tops and sweaters. And those leg warmers you probably wear during dance class or with boots nowadays were actually worn everyday, all day along with bright colored leggings. Don’t worry though, it gets better. Mini skirts and huge, glamorous earrings were the rage and they still are today!
“Can’t Touch This”—90’s
The 1990’s were full of unique styles that you just can’t touch! As long as you had a JanSport backpack, you were safe with the cool kids. Any other brand in the 90’s, well let’s just say you were better off just staying at home. Denim jumpsuits, also known as “jumpers,” were also in style; all the cool kids always had one strap undone. Plastic butterfly clips were also cherished by girls of all ages. The more in your hair the merrier! Plaid, schoolgirl skirts were also made famous by pop-singer Britney Spears.
“
Beautiful”—2000’s
“You are beautiful no matter what they say, words can’t bring you down.” Ever hear this song on the radio? It was released in 2002 by Christina Aguilera. Some early trends of this millenium included wearing a simple tank top with a cute frilly or denim skirt. Low-rise flared jeans were also cool to wear. Charm bracelets became extremely fashionable between 2004-2006. Rubber bracelets and shaped Silly Bandz were the rage back in 2010. During the 2000s everyone wanted to know where they got their clothes so brand logo shirts and sweatshirts became famous from stores like Aeropostale, Abercrombie and Fitch, and Limited Too. 70s UGGs made a huge comeback in the 2000s and were made re-famous by celebrities like Oprah, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kate Hudson.
“Fancy”—2K14/2K15
“I’m so fancy” says Charli XCX and Iggy Azalea as they perform a spin-off music video based on the 1995 movie Clueless. Current trends include the infinity scarf and joggers. As you all may know, the new term of the year is “salty” (i.e. “Dude she was so salty when Gretchen bought the same prom dress.”) A trending hairdo among today’s gentlemen is the classic Side Swept (made popular during the ‘20s and ‘40s). Variations of the Side Swept are also referred to as the “Hitler Youth” look.
